This may not be a genuine SP Beetle, but it is about as close as you are likely to find. A precise, beautifully executed recreation that has been restored with exceptional attention to detail.
This Beetle has remained in one family since new. It was first used by the grandmother, then passed to her daughter and is now with the son, who commissioned a complete restoration to SP specification. Generation Old School in Benoni, renowned for its Volkswagen restorations, was involved in the work, and the quality can be seen throughout.
The red bodywork and paint present exceptionally well, with the correct SP-style decals, colour-coded chin spoiler, mirrors, trim, surrounds and wheels all carefully attended to. Nothing looks out of place.
The same applies inside. The immaculate interior has been completed in the correct style, including the steering wheel and gauges, creating an authentic SP cabin that feels properly finished rather than simply dressed up. The original owner’s manual is still present and kept in the cubby hole.
Its original 1600 twin-port engine is fitted with the two SP carburettors and paired with a manual transmission. She starts and runs beautifully, sounds excellent and delivers the simple, comfortable driving experience that makes a well-sorted air-cooled Volkswagen such a pleasure. All lights, gauges, wipers and windows are working.
Yes, it is not a genuine SP, and we are not selling it as one. A substantial amount has been spent recreating the details correctly, and a genuine SP in comparable condition would command considerably more. For someone wanting the SP look, character and driving experience in a beautifully restored package, this is a very compelling Beetle.
